Making A Dog House

Are you looking for a nice dog house for your four-legged friend? How nice is it, if you are a little handy, to make these yourself? We tell you how you can make your own dog house!

The preparation

Before you can actually start building your dog house, it is important to pay attention to the following points:

  • The location
Think carefully about where you want to place the dog house. Provide a shady spot if possible. It is also important that you place the dog house in such a way that your dog has an overview and can see into the garden.
  • The size
You determine the dimensions of the dog house based on the size of your dog: large, medium, or small dog. The size of your dog is especially important for the opening. In the step-by-step plan below we start by making a dog house of 95 x 85 x 85 cm for a medium-sized dog.

The back wall

Always start by making the back wall of the dog house. You make the back wall by putting 8 profile planks of 80 cm on top of each other. Make sure the planks fit together properly. Tap each plank with a hammer. Connect the profile planks of the rear wall with 3 spruce slats. Install two slats 5 cm from the edge and 1 slat in the middle. Also, leave 4 cm free at the bottom.

A pointed roof

Draw two oblique lines on the back wall from the center to the top of the sixth shelf. Saw along these lines to create a gabled roof.

The front

You make the front in the same way as the back wall with the peaked roof (steps 1 and 2). The only difference is that the front gets an entrance. Run the arched entrance from the second through sixth planks. Keep 25 cm free on the sides. Drill a hole on the marked entrance with an 8 mm wood drill. Then, using a jigsaw, cut out the entrance to the doghouse completely from the hole. To reinforce the inside, screw a spruce batten on both sides of the entrance.

The side walls

Take the corner posts and make a mark at 10 cm from the bottom. Make side walls from 6 planks and slide them up to the line between the corner posts. Fasten each plank to the corner posts with 2 angled screws. Then slide the front and back wall into the corner posts and screw them in place.

Install end posts

An end post has a groove on one side. Provide all walls at the bottom of the dog house with an end post for a nice finish. Screw the end posts to the planks.

The bottom plate

The bottom plate is made from a plate underlayment of 76 x 86 cm. Saw out four corners of 2.5 x 5 cm from the corners. And make openings at the front and back for the spruce slats to fall into. Lower the bottom plate onto the end posts from above, then screw in.

The roof

The roof of the doghouse is made of two plates of underlayment. Screw the plates onto the angled ridge pieces. To keep it neat and symmetrical, always check that the roof protrudes just as much all around. Finish the roof with roof shingles. Finish the eaves at the front and back of the dog house with wooden corner profiles and screw them in place. After putting it all in places you can now use synthetic bristles to paint and design the house of your dog.
